Europe or Die
Operation Mare Nostrum
Swords into ploughshares: In 2014, this biblical promise has been realized in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy’s navy rescued over 140,000 refugees with its battleships in the southern Mediterranean. The campaign “Mare Nostrum” should have won the Nobel Prize, but it ended silently after just one year. The European follow-up operation “Triton” has significantly less money available, patrols on the high seas are not scheduled. Hereafter the refugees’ bitter fate could be the sea.
As the first German camera team on board the “San Giorgio” we attended a dramatic “Mare Nostrum” rescue mission.
