The Palace of the Stranded
Palazzo Selam – Rome
Muna lives in the Palazzo Selam. This is the name of the inhospitable concrete block in the middle of Rome – Palace of Peace. The former university building is the involuntary home of over a thousand refugees, primarily from Africa. The largest refugee ghetto in Europe, some of its inhabitants have been living there for years. Cut off from the outside world, almost as if dwelling in their own little nation. They have taken their lives – and their survival – into their own hands, like Muna, a 26-year-old Somalian. The Palazzo was actually only supposed to be a stopover during their journey to a better future.
